Port Guide
Nepal is landlocked and all vehicle imports must transit through India. The primary transit route is Kolkata Port (India) to Raxaul border crossing to Birganj ICD (Nepal). Alternatively, Haldia Port (India) is used. The Kolkata-Raxaul transit requires an Indian transit customs bond. Nepal Customs clearance at Birgunj ICD: 7–21 working days. The transit through India adds complexity and time — budget 6–10 weeks total from UK. Indian transit approval and documentation adds a critical layer to the standard export process.
Local Market Advice
Nepal's high import duties make vehicles expensive. However, NGO and diplomatic demand for 4WDs is consistent in Kathmandu. Road conditions in Nepal make 4WD essential outside Kathmandu Valley. The Land Cruiser Prado and Defender are the most aspirational imports. Nepal has a small but genuine prestige market among business families in Kathmandu. Transit through India is the critical complexity — work with a freight forwarder who has specific India-Nepal transit experience. UK vehicles should be recent and in excellent condition to justify the duty cost.
