Port Guide

Zimbabwe is landlocked. Durban (South Africa) is the preferred port — road transit to Harare via Beit Bridge border post (~1,800km). Beit Bridge is the busiest land border in sub-Saharan Africa and can experience significant congestion — allow 1–5 days for border crossing.

Alternatively transit via Mozambique (Beira) is available but less common. ZIMRA requires pre-clearance documentation. Budget 4–8 weeks total from UK to Harare including transit.

Local Market Advice

Harare and Bulawayo are the primary markets. Zimbabwe operates partially in USD which simplifies international transactions. The prestige car market in Harare is active — Range Rover, BMW and Mercedes are aspirational brands.

Toyota parts are widely available; European brand parts require ordering from South Africa. Both petrol and diesel are widely available. Import duty is among the highest in Africa so buyers are cost-conscious — lower CIF values help but must be accurate on official documents.

Most Popular Vehicles

Zimbabwe has one of the most generous vehicle age limits in Africa — 10 years — which opens the market to a wider range of quality UK pre-owned vehicles. The Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series is the country's most coveted working vehicle: the 76 Station Wagon is the standard transport of choice for farmers, NGOs, mining operations and rural businesses across Mashonaland, Matabeleland and Manicaland. The 79 Dual Cab is widely used in agriculture and mining. UK-sourced RHD examples are specifically preferred because they need no conversion, and the quality of specification from UK fleet users is markedly higher than equivalent Japanese or South African market vehicles.

The Toyota Hilux is Zimbabwe's best-selling utility vehicle — the 2.4L and 2.8L diesel variants in double-cab configuration dominate the market. Land Rover Defender (classic Td5 and Puma variants as well as new-generation) remain aspirational vehicles across Zimbabwe's farming community. The Nissan Patrol GR Y61 is popular for its exceptional off-road capability in remote areas. Range Rover Sport is popular in Harare and Bulawayo among Zimbabwe's professional class and diaspora returnees. A 10-year age limit means a 2014–2016 UK Defender, Hilux or Land Cruiser is still fully importable today.

Common Questions

How does shipping to land-locked Zimbabwe work?

Zimbabwe is land-locked, so all vehicle imports travel by sea to Beira Port in Mozambique — the most direct coastal point — and then overland by road transporter approximately 300km to Harare, or further west to Bulawayo. Alternatively, vehicles can route via Durban (South Africa) with a longer overland haul. The sea transit from UK to Beira is approximately 25–30 days. Mozambique transit documents are required for onward delivery into Zimbabwe. We work with clearing agents in both Beira and Harare to manage the full transit seamlessly.

What vehicles qualify under Zimbabwe's 10-year age limit?

Zimbabwe's 10-year age limit is among the most lenient in sub-Saharan Africa, applied from the year of manufacture. Importing in 2025 means vehicles from 2015 onwards are eligible; in 2026, from 2016. This makes a wide range of well-maintained UK pre-owned vehicles viable — including classic Land Rover Defenders (Td5 and Puma), 2015–2018 Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series, and early-generation Range Rover Sports. The 10-year window is a significant advantage for cost-conscious buyers who want proven vehicles at lower price points.

What import duty rates apply in Zimbabwe?

Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) applies duty on CIF value. Import duty rates for used vehicles are typically 40% of CIF value, with VAT at 15% applied on the post-duty amount, plus a 5% surtax. This makes Zimbabwe duties relatively high compared to neighbouring countries. However, the combination of the 10-year age limit (allowing older, cheaper UK vehicles) and the strong demand for reliable RHD vehicles means UK exports remain commercially viable. We provide a full duty-inclusive landed cost estimate before you commit.
