Port Guide
Durban (Port of Durban) handles the majority of vehicle imports — the Ro-Ro Terminal at Point is the main vehicle handling facility. Cape Town and Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) are alternatives. Durban is Africa's busiest container port with well-established vehicle import infrastructure.
NRCS (National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications) type approval is a critical step — all vehicle imports must comply with South African Compulsory Specifications (SANS). UK right-hand drive vehicles align with SA road use but must obtain an NRCS letter of authority. Work with a SA-based compliance agent before shipping. Left-hand drive vehicles cannot be legally registered in South Africa.
Local Market Advice
South Africa has a sophisticated, established car market. Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban are the primary markets. The prestige market is strong — Defender V8 and Range Rover SV are highly aspirational. NRCS compliance is the critical issue — ensure this is arranged before committing to shipment.
South Africa's own vehicle manufacturing base means domestic pricing is competitive for mainstream brands. UK vehicles make most sense for prestige or rare models not available locally at equivalent prices. Finance and payment via standard international wire transfer is straightforward. The supercar and ultra-luxury segment is small but active — particularly in Sandton (Johannesburg) and the Atlantic Seaboard (Cape Town).
