Port Guide

Maputo Port is the primary vehicle import port, handling the majority of southern Mozambique's imports. Beira Port serves central Mozambique and is also a transit hub for landlocked Zambia and Zimbabwe. Nacala Port serves the north.

Maputo is the most efficient for clearance — AT offices well-established. Beira clearance times can be 2–4 weeks. Pre-inspection is required. USD and MZN are both used for port fees.

Local Market Advice

Maputo has a sophisticated market for prestige vehicles driven by NGO and diplomatic communities. Diesel 4WD vehicles are dominant due to road conditions north of Maputo. Portuguese is the official language — ensure all correspondence is bilingual or translated.

The Cabo Delgado gas development zone (north) has high demand for work-spec Hilux and Land Cruiser. Parts supply is best in Maputo; regional areas rely on South Africa supply chains.

Most Popular Vehicles

Mozambique's vast territory — stretching 2,500km from north to south — demands durable, high-clearance vehicles. The Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series is the dominant choice for anyone operating outside Maputo city: the 76 Station Wagon and 79 Dual Cab are standard kit for NGOs, mining companies, agricultural businesses and government departments throughout the country. UK-sourced right-hand-drive Land Cruisers are particularly sought after because they arrive in better condition than Japanese grey-market imports that come via Durban.

The Toyota Hilux is the second most popular vehicle, especially in northern Mozambique where road conditions are worst and the Hilux's simplicity and parts availability are decisive advantages. Land Rover Defender (both classic and new generation) has a loyal following among expatriate workers and foreign investors, particularly in the Pemba and Nacala corridors where gas and infrastructure investment is concentrated. Mitsubishi L200 is a practical budget alternative to the Hilux. Nissan Hardbody (NP300) is widely used in the South African overland trade. Portuguese documentation is required for all customs processes.

Common Questions

Do documents need to be in Portuguese for Mozambique customs?

Yes — Mozambique is a Portuguese-speaking country and all customs declarations, import permits and supporting documentation submitted to Mozambique Customs (AT — Autoridade Tributária) must be in Portuguese or accompanied by certified Portuguese translations. The commercial invoice, Bill of Lading, and vehicle description must all be translated. We work with certified translators and prepare a complete Portuguese-language document pack for all Mozambique shipments, ensuring customs clearance is not delayed by language requirements.

Should I use Maputo Port or Beira Port?

The choice depends on your final destination. Maputo Port (in the south) is the country's primary commercial port with the best infrastructure and fastest processing times — ideal for buyers in Maputo city and the southern provinces. Beira Port (in central Mozambique) is better for buyers in Sofala, Manica, Tete and Zambezia provinces, and is the main transhipment point for overland cargo heading to landlocked Zimbabwe and Zambia. We can advise on which port is most practical and cost-effective for your specific delivery location.

What are the import duty rates in Mozambique?

Mozambique applies a tiered duty structure based on vehicle age and engine capacity. Import duty rates typically range from 20–35% of CIF value, with VAT (IVA) at 17% applied on top of the duty-inclusive value. Newer vehicles attract higher duty rates in some engine brackets. There is also an additional customs handling fee. The 8-year age limit is enforced — vehicles older than 8 years from manufacture date are prohibited from import. We provide a full landed-cost calculation for your specific vehicle before you commit to purchase.
