Port Guide
Port Louis Harbour is the main and only significant port in Mauritius. The modern container terminal (CT3) handles all vehicle imports. There is no dedicated RoRo berth — all vehicles must be containerised. Typical clearance takes 5–10 working days. MRA operates a good online customs system (MAUTAS) enabling efficient processing.
Petrol and diesel vehicles over 3 years old will be refused at the port — this is a critical rule that must be verified before shipment. Hybrid and electric vehicles benefit from significantly lower excise duty, making them the most commercially viable imports. An import permit must be obtained before shipment for used vehicles — do not ship without this in place.
Local Market Advice
Mauritius drives on the left — RHD vehicles from the UK are ideal. The strict 5-year rule means only recent models are viable exports. The excise duty structure heavily incentivises small-engine hybrids — Honda Fit Hybrid, Toyota Aqua, and Nissan Note e-Power are by far the most popular imported models. Large luxury SUVs incur very high duties, making them expensive even before local retail margin.
For prestige vehicles, the Range Rover Evoque is popular as duty remains manageable. Mauritius has a strong banking system — international transactions are straightforward. The high-income tourism economy supports demand for quality vehicles. Service history and condition are closely scrutinised by Mauritian buyers.
