Port Guide

Kingston Wharves (Port of Kingston) is the main vehicle import terminal. Newport West is the primary container terminal. Montego Bay has a secondary facility. Kingston Wharves operates a dedicated vehicle processing area — handling is efficient relative to regional peers.

Typical clearance time is 5–10 working days once documents are lodged with customs. A licensed Jamaican customs broker is required by law. Port charges include THC, storage and customs agent fees. Documents must be lodged electronically via the ASYCUDA system before vessel arrival.

Local Market Advice

Jamaica is one of the UK's most active Caribbean export markets. The 6-year age limit for motor cars means vehicles manufactured from 2020 onwards are eligible in 2026. Toyota dominates at the affordable end. At the prestige end, Range Rover, BMW and Mercedes are the aspirational choices. Returning residents may import vehicles up to 10 years old if owned for at least 6 months.

Automatic transmission is strongly preferred. White, silver and black are the most marketable colours. Condition is critical — Kingston buyers inspect carefully. Right-hand drive is preferred as Jamaica drives on the left. The remittance community in the UK and US actively sources vehicles for family in Jamaica. Japanese-import spec cars are common competition — UK cars must compete on condition and specification.
