Port Guide
Georgetown Harbour (Guyana National Industrial Corporation Terminal) is the primary vehicle import port. Walter Roth Wharves is also used. Georgetown port has basic facilities and clearance often takes 10–21 days with significant port charges. RoRo is not regularly available — container shipping is the standard method.
Work with a Georgetown-based customs agent who knows local GRA procedures. The discovery of offshore oil (ExxonMobil, 2015 onwards) has dramatically increased purchasing power — Guyana is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, and this is driving rapid growth in prestige vehicle imports.
Local Market Advice
Guyana's oil boom has transformed the prestige vehicle market. Georgetown now has genuine demand for Range Rover, BMW X5, Land Rover Defender and Mercedes GLE that simply did not exist five years ago. The Guyanese diaspora in Canada, the US and UK has long been a consistent source of vehicle imports — and this channel is growing rapidly.
The 5-year age rule applies — recent models only. Roads outside Georgetown are often poor, making 4WD essential for rural travel. RHD (drives on the left). Diesel is popular for fuel economy. Oil-sector employees and executives are the primary prestige buyers. Guyana represents one of the most significant growth markets for UK car export in the Caribbean region.
