Overview — Cyprus and UK Imports
Cyprus joined the European Union in 2004, which means EU customs rules govern the import of goods from non-EU countries — including the UK since Brexit. However, Cyprus has a significant practical advantage over most EU member states when it comes to UK vehicle imports: Cyprus drives on the left-hand side of the road, making UK-specification right-hand drive vehicles directly compatible with no modification required.
This is not the case in most of continental Europe, where LHD is the norm. Cyprus — along with Malta — is one of only two EU member states where RHD vehicles are used as standard. The practical implication is that the pool of suitable UK vehicles for Cyprus import is far larger than for any other EU destination, and no expensive steering conversion is needed.
Post-Brexit (since 1 January 2021), UK vehicles are treated as imports from a third country when entering the EU. This means customs duty and VAT apply on import, and standard EU import procedures must be followed at the port of entry.
Duty & Tax Breakdown
The key taxes payable when importing a vehicle from the UK to Cyprus are:
| Tax | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| EU Customs Duty | 6.5% | Applied to the CIF value (cost + insurance + freight). Post-Brexit rate for passenger cars from UK. |
| Cyprus VAT | 19% | Applied to the CIF value plus customs duty combined. |
| Registration Tax / Excise | Variable | Based on CO2 emissions and engine capacity. Zero-emission vehicles may qualify for reduced rates. |
Worked example: A Range Rover Autobiography purchased in the UK for £120,000, shipped to Limassol at a CIF value of £123,000 (including freight and insurance):
- Customs Duty: 6.5% of £123,000 = £7,995
- VAT Base: £123,000 + £7,995 = £130,995
- VAT at 19%: £24,889
- Total duty and VAT: approximately £32,884 (before registration tax)
Registration tax is additional and varies significantly based on CO2 emissions. High-emission petrol models (e.g. a 4.4-litre V8 Range Rover) can attract a registration tax of several thousand euros. Hybrid and low-emission models benefit from reduced registration tax.
Re-Registration Process in Cyprus
Once the vehicle clears customs at Limassol port, it must be registered with the Transport Ministry of Cyprus (TMCY) to receive Cypriot plates. The process involves the following steps:
- Customs clearance: Pay import duty and VAT at the customs office at Limassol port. You will need the Bill of Lading, commercial invoice, V5C, and proof of ownership.
- Technical inspection: The vehicle must pass a roadworthiness test at an authorised inspection station in Cyprus. UK vehicles generally meet or exceed Cypriot and EU standards, so this is usually straightforward. Lights may need adjustment for left-hand traffic patterns (UK headlights are angled for left-hand traffic, which is correct for Cyprus too — so no adjustment is needed for RHD vehicles).
- Registration tax assessment: The Tax Department assesses registration tax based on CO2 emissions and engine displacement.
- Insurance: Cypriot third-party insurance must be in place before the vehicle can be driven on public roads.
- TMCY registration: Submit all documentation and payment receipts to obtain Cypriot registration plates and log book.
RHD Advantage — Cyprus Drives on the Left
This cannot be overstated as a practical benefit. When importing a Range Rover, Porsche Cayenne, or Bentley Bentayga from the UK to Cyprus, the vehicle arrives in exactly the correct configuration for Cypriot roads. The driver sits on the right, with full visibility of the road edge and oncoming traffic — exactly as intended.
This contrasts with the situation in mainland European countries (France, Germany, Spain, etc.) where importers of UK RHD vehicles face headlight modification requirements and sometimes insurance complications. In Cyprus, none of these issues apply. UK RHD vehicles are fully accepted and widely used.
Shipping from the UK — Limassol Port
The primary port of entry for vehicles shipped to Cyprus from the UK is Limassol (Port of Limassol), located on the southern coast of Cyprus. Shipping options include:
- RoRo: Available and used for standard and prestige vehicles. Transit time from UK ports (Grimsby, Southampton, Tilbury) to Limassol is approximately 7–10 days.
- Container: Preferred for high-value prestige vehicles. Same transit time range. A dedicated 20ft container provides full protection.
Shipping frequency is good — there are regular services from UK ports to Limassol, operated by major RoRo lines including Grimaldi and others via intermediate ports. Your UK export agent will advise on the most current schedules and costs.
CO2 and Engine Considerations
Cyprus applies CO2-based registration tax, which means the engine choice has a meaningful impact on total import cost. As a general principle:
- Plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles attract the lowest registration tax rates and may benefit from additional incentives.
- Mid-range petrol engines (2.0–3.0 litre, below 200g/km CO2) fall into a moderate tax band.
- Large-displacement petrol and diesel engines (4.0+ litre, 250g/km+ CO2) attract the highest registration tax — which can add €3,000–€8,000 or more to the import cost.
Buyers importing a Rolls-Royce Cullinan (6.75-litre V12) or a Bentayga W12 should budget for significant registration tax. Conversely, a Cayenne E-Hybrid or Range Rover PHEV version will have a considerably lower registration tax burden.
Documents Required
- UK V5C (vehicle registration document)
- Original purchase invoice / proof of purchase value
- Bill of Lading (from shipping company)
- Commercial invoice and packing list
- Marine insurance certificate
- Passport / ID of importer
- Proof of residence in Cyprus (if claiming personal import relief — for residents returning from UK)
Tips and Common Mistakes
- Budget for registration tax: Many buyers are surprised by the CO2-based registration tax, especially on large-engine luxury cars. Get an estimate in advance from a Cypriot customs broker.
- Use a local clearing agent: A Cypriot customs broker will streamline the clearance process at Limassol and ensure all documents are in order before the vessel arrives.
- Check the vehicle's emissions certificate: Some older UK vehicles do not have a readily available CO2 certification. Ensure the seller can provide an EC Certificate of Conformity or equivalent.
- Don't drive the vehicle before registration: The vehicle cannot be legally driven on Cypriot roads until it has been registered and has Cypriot insurance — even on a temporary basis.
